The problem I am experiencing is attempting to identify the torque necessary to turn the brush hog at a certain RPM. It's slightly underpowered for a 5 foot brush hog if you go by the 5hp per foot of diameter of the mower, but it should be okay. If you're replacing a tractor pto shaft with a hydraulic motor, you need a motor that turns at 540 rpm given 17.7 gpm.
When I had a bush hog loader, I found that Bush Hog made an adapter to fit that loader. Might try that. I used a Kubota SSQA adapter on my L3710 when I did it. It was nice to be able to bolt on and go. It was around 500 bucks and I felt it was money well spent.
It has occurred to me that since I am not really mowing down trees, why not find an older (cheap) brush hog, remove the tail wheel, weld a skid loader attach plate to the upper deck at the rear of the mower and install a hydraulic motor to drive the existing gearbox?
