My old boss had a full sized Cat skid steer with a stump grinder attatchment. He also had the gas powered Vermeer SC 252 27 horse power stump grinder. Between the two the vermeer would take the skid steer hands down every single time. I think they used the skid steer attatchment twice before they realized it was useless. Then it comes to the almighty dollar. The mini skid mount costs the same as the excavator mount (which you weld/bolt your specific ears to), the full size skid steer mount costs 0 more. The smallest hydraulic, the 220 Low Flow Ex/Mini mount, lists for ,495. The biggest hydraulic, the 280 High Flow Ex/Mini mount, lists for ,095. For now I rent a full size skid steer and just use the smooth bucket that it comes with to push and roll logs and to move wood chips. As for tractors that is the main loader of choice in my hometown, typically with a root grapple or pallet forks and a couple of companies with a full size skid steer with the same attachments.
