I calculated the cost of full stone backfill VS the cost of the roller, labor, time (10' high basement walls) and I could pay for the roller over the time of the job and save around K. (I would have some skid steer time involved in placing the stone and already had the skid.) Thinking of a skid steer roller compactor and wondering how they compare in performance with a small roller compactor like a Compac T40D a 9000 pound machine, 54 inch wide drum. What depth can the skid steer compactor actually compact sand? What compaction will a skid steer achieve in sand.
Since buying trench rollers we have no reason for a skid steer roller anymore. For what we do and our soils a trench roller works great for compaction jobs that doesn't warrant bringing in our 84" padfoot. You can pick up a good used trench roller at auction for -7K. This one has the pads so it is not smooth. I needed and wanted a smooth drum but I got this one. I don't use it a lot, but it works great for me on a T190. I have had no trouble at all. It works best with little pressure on the boom. I feel no vibration in the CTL, however if someone else is running and I stand near it you can feel the ground .
