I have a 1995 F-350 dually with a steel flat bed dump (12 ft bed I believe) and I want to tow a 2001 Case 1845C skid-steer, I have 16,000 lbs tags on the truck. What ratings do I look for, GCWR, or GVWR??? The loader can easily be transported by any half-ton truck with a simple low bed float. A 3.5-ton low bed float, for example, has an empty weight of about 2,000 pounds, a payload of 5,000 pounds, and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 7,000 pounds. I would not tow anyting with a half ton over 6,000lbs, even though they are rated higher. but if the load is under 6,000lbs then you would have no trouble pulling it around town or on the highway.
I pull a 16" trailer with my 1997 Ford F150. I've hauled my MF135 with a 84" mower, my 743B Bobcat skid steer, and up to 5 round bales without any problems.
I would not recommend pulling a skid steer with a half ton. I've done it once and braking isn't really a thing. You can do it short distances as long as you go slow and leave a lot of room in front of you for other vehicles. Even with bigger trucks, putting it on the trailer right is key. I used my 1/2 ton Chev to pull a mini excavator & T250 Bobcat around this last week on Dad's 14K skid steer trailer. I knew I was beyond legal limits for that truck, but I couldn't use Dad's P/U to pull the trailer so I made do with what I have.
